An open letter to Brad Barker - 11/28/2004

I found Brad Barker's commentary on the state of

current music a "classic" argument. Of course none of the "current" music is as good as the old stuff. It never is, cars aren't made as well either, houses are more expensive, and gas used to cost a nickel a

gallon!

The truth is music now is better no matter how you look at it. There are more choices, more outlets, and more ways to purchase and listen to it. With the revolution in digital music you have more access to new music than ever before. With Real networks Rhapsody program you can play and purchase over 700,000 songs (including your moldy oldies) on your PC for $10 a month. With the service you can easily connect Rhapsody to your home stereo. Its like owning a home jukebox with 75% of the songs ever written in it. Not only would it cost literally hundreds of thousands of dollars to create such a collection in your house, but how many wearhouses would you need to store it all? Apple's Itunes allows to you download hundreds of thousands of songs to your PC and burn them on CDS for only $.99 a song and you don't have do download album tracks you don't like. Apple's revolutionary Ipod allows you to carry up to 10,000 songs anywhere you go, from jogging, to your car, to your home stereo and look Mom: no skipping!! Through on-line services like CDbaby.com you can purchase CDs inexpensively, experiment with new music you haven't heard before by listening to on-line MP3s, and experience new music that isn't on major record companies. Satelite radio companies like XM radio are available also featuring hundreds of stations playing everything from Raggae to Emo to Classic Rock with no commericials for only $12 a month!

If you are one of those that believe that pop music isn't better today than ever before you have missed the boat. If all you notice is Britney Spears that is your individual choice. Take some time and explore what the internet has done to change your available choices. If you are willing to take the time the possibilities are endless. The only mandate is that you need to open your eyes or you can just take them to Canada.
